First held in in 1992, this is the very first festival of its kind in the Czech Republic. Responding to the constant demand from audiences for concerts of sacred music thematically linked with Easter – an important period of the liturgical year – the Easter Festival of Sacred Music remains unique in Central Europe, an international project dedicated solely to sacred music that showcases novel programming and outstanding performances.
A key point of departure for the programmes is provided by the festival’s closeness to the most important Christian holiday. Among the festival’s other objectives, it aims to unearth unjustifiably neglected music and commission new sacred works.
Whereas previously the festival was largely inspired by the events commemorated during Holy Week and the themes of sacrifice, suffering and resurrection, the 28th year of the festival will discover the various aspects of these themes across time and throughout the Christian world. In 2019, in the imaginary centre of Europe, all corners of the world and their liturgies will meet over two weeks.
