The Brno Philharmonic Sent Its First Flash Mob to the World

In the Brno shopping center Galerie Vaňkovka members of the orchestra discreetly mingled with the crowd dressed in civilian clothes, uniformed staff or servicemen, only with their instruments beside. Then they surprised the store visitors by playing Smetana’s “Moldau” (Vltava).

Unusual performance of the symphonic poem was directed by the chief conductor Aleksandar Marković.

When Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) was composing one of his greatest and best known works, the Cello Concerto in B minor, he heard about the severe illness that afflicted the love of his youth and later his sister-in-law Josefina, the wife of Count Kounic. The composer responded by quoting one of Josefina’s favourite songs of his, ‘Leave Me Alone’ (from Four Songs, Op. 82), in the second movement. Following her death Dvořák decided to alter the concerto’s finale, quoting this theme once more and attaching one of his most moving musical farewells.

The Slavonic Rhapsodies (1878) are a loose triptych of contrasting pieces (not linked together by overarching ideas): an idyllic mood prevails in the first, the second is dramatic, the third joyfully exuberant. The composer premièred the first two himself with the Provisional Theatre orchestra in Prague in November 1878; the third was taken up a year later by Wilhelm Taubert and the Königliche Kapelle in Berlin. Even today, the Slavonic Rhapsodies are rarely presented together in a concert programme; indeed, the performance of any of them is lamentably rare.

of Smetana’s loss of hearing. As they say, “We bear no responsibility for birth or death, but the fact that we can still function normally when we have gone deaf is worth the greatest celebration.” They continue: “Apparently, we live in a time when notated music is being radically transformed, and may become obsolete. The written score, once the sole means of reproducing music, has been reduced to a set of guidelines for its various realisations and today is only one of many tools in contemporary music. Music is not like literature – it is more abstract – and yet it provides a testimony about the world in a medium other than language. In Smetana’s time, the score followed a strict design; the performer knew how each note should sound, how the work’s entire concept ought to be realised. The score was a kind of mnemonic device helping to achieve the sound of the era. Smetana was a novel figure: he earned his living in Sweden and then threw himself into creating something as marginal as Czech music. He used everything that was available, like Rettigová and Srbová composing in their kitchens, and it is proof of his genius that this mixture of Mozart, Strauss, brass-band music, Liszt, polkas and unverified myths still works to this day. It was thanks to this that he was able to compose after going deaf. He knew what he wanted, and did not have to compromise for anything or anyone. He had experience of auditory hallucinations, then went deaf, first in one ear and later in the other, and yet the idea never occurred to him that he should stop composing. With Smetana’s legacy living on for centuries to come, it would be a pity to limit his music to a written score, as by engaging with it creatively we can enter into surreal, unreal, nonsensical, action-oriented, creative, interactive or virtual sound fantasies.” The project entitled Never heard, yet unheard-of recalls that “vlast” or homeland which Smetana never heard. Over a single day, it will be performed in three distinct ways – from traditional to purely contemporary – in separate concerts.
