The composition “Happy Birthday Maestro” was written as a gift for the 80th birthday of the Filharmonie Brno’s chief conductor Dennis Russell Davies. We chose the opening from Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 80 in D minor as the main theme. We approached several Czech and international composers who have collaborated with Dennis Russell Davies in recent years and invited them to compose a variation on Haydn’s theme. Laurie Anderson (USA), Benjamin Yusupov (Israel), Tigran Mansurian (Armenia), Michal Nejtek (Czech Republic), Kurt Schwertsik (Austria) and Petr Jirák (Czech Republic) accepted the challenge. The piece was recorded by Laurie Anderson (Prologue) and the Filharmonie Brno under the baton of Robert Kružík.
Special thanks to Julian Veverica, our violist and author of the video.
