we would like to inform you that there was a system error and the wrong time (8 p.m.) was printed on the tickets for the New Year’s Concert.

The New Year’s Concert will take place on January 1st 2024 at 7 p.m. at the Janáček Theatre.

The young violinist Tereza Horáková has been a lively performer of contemporary music since childhood and has achieved notable success in the field. In her recital she will present two notable works for the violin: Roman Berger’s Convergence I for the solo instrument and Luigi Nono’s La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura for violin and eight magnetic tapes. Both composers emphasise the ethical message and the generous concept of their musical works, even if their sounds contrast. This comparison of two great works and composers in a single evening offers an extraordinary experience.

This unusual evening will offer the first Czech presentation of an interesting portrait of the American artist Alvin Lucier, in the form of the screening of an artistic film documentary by Hauke Harder and Viola Rusche, No Ideas But in Things – The Composer Alvin Lucier. Inspired by his motto “Don’t ask me what I mean, ask me what I’ve made”, the documentary observes the famous composer’s works from early live electronic performances to the premičre of his ensemble piece Panorama 2 in 2011. As part of the evening, the Brno audience will experience for the first time the live performance of his celebrated sound art piece I Am Sitting in a Room presented by Fero Király and Eva Vozárová.

The world premičre of an unusual solo multimedia project by the composer, percussionist and creator of experimental musical instruments Dan Dlouhý (aka Dama Dama, the leader of the DAMA DAMA Central European Percussion Ensemble) presents the many aspects of his oeuvre. Located on the boundary between musical-visual in stallation and bizarre theatre performance, with excerpts from Dlouhý’s works for acoustic and electro-acoustic musical instruments live and recorded, the composer’s solo music and movement performance brings together the sounding object, text, pictures, voice and video, sometimes co-created by artificial intelligence. The idea is to investigate the contact surfaces between various musical and thought worlds: the “live” and the mechanical, the expressive and the emotionless, the moving and the static, the original and the copy.

Communicating Vessels is a collective work by five composer-performers commissioned by the festival Exposition of New Music. Lasting for an hour, this acoustic experience was conceived specifically for the unique site of Brno’s water cisterns, which visitors will be able to explore both acoustically and spatially. Communicating Vessels celebrates the preservation of matter in various states that have become so ubiquitous in our daily lives we hardly perceive them anymore. The drinking glass, coffee cup, jar and water bucket evolved extremely slowly yet have become indispensable objects to us. We can describe a perceiving and thinking person as a vessel – their mind can accommodate a variety of contents. As with hydrostatic pressure, with a person
what matters is not the amount of liquid but “the depth of the vessel“…

The work was commissioned by the Exposure Festival of new music on the occasion of the Year of Czech Music 2024.
