The Orchestral Academy of the Brno Philharmonic (OAFB) is a project that enables young talented musicians – students or recent graduates of music schools accepted on the basis of a selection procedure – to gain orchestral practice in a professional ensemble. In this way, the Philharmonic is educating new generations of players who may one day join its ranks. The OAFB has been in operation for six seasons and the fruits are already evident: some of its graduates are already members of our orchestra, others return regularly to help out. The importance and value of this experience for the artistic growth of the young musicians and for the future of the orchestra is thus unquestionable.

In recent seasons, the Young Blood series has won over large audiences who appreciate the youthfully engaging performances of the performers, the attractive and varied repertoire, and not least the captivating atmosphere of these concerts, during which the Besední dům hall is intimately lit, atypically arranged, and the musicians are almost within reach, as the subtitle of the Music Up Close series suggests. During the concerts, the barrier of the stage and the evening gown is removed. However, it has become a tradition that former OAFB members or other guests perform at Young Blood concerts.

Dmitri Shostakovich’s (1906–1975) Symphony No. 4 in C minor (1936) has been characterised as a “sonic panorama of the 1930s Soviet Union”. It is a prospect both monumental and frightening, with elements of sarcasm and irony so distinctive of Shostakovich. The work was written in a time when an aggressive attack was being waged against its composer and others. Shostakovich did, however, complete the symphony and entrusted the Leningrad Philharmonic with its performance. Instead of proceeding with the premičre, a note was published that the composer had had it withdrawn. We now know that this was an act of self-preservation. Shostakovich’s life was at risk, and he even contemplated suicide. In 1945, with Mieczysław Weinberg he played his own arrangement of the symphony for two pianos in a private concert, gradually reconciling himself to the fact that a public performance would be unlikely. It did eventually happen, though, on 30 December 1961, thanks to the chief conductor of Moscow Philharmonic Kirill Kondrashin.
