8. Dezember 2024, Musikverein Wien
Juni 2025, Musikverein Wien
************************
On April 14, 2024, the Brno Filharmonie will be a guest at the Wiener Konzerthaus under the artistic direction of Dennis Russell Davies. Three anniversaries and three great composers are the focus of the first concert evening of the Brno Filharmonie in the Vienna Konzerthaus. 100 years ago, on February 12, 1924, the premiere of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” took place at the Aeolian Hall in New York. 70 years have passed since Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s “Symphony in F sharp major” was heard for the first time in Vienna in October 1954 and the composer Ervín (Erwin) Schulhoff, born in Prague in 1894, will celebrate his 130th birthday in 2024. The Gershwin composition will be played by the chief conductor of the Brno Philharmonic, Dennis Russell Davies himself and he will conduct it from the piano at the same time.

It is also a contribution to the Year of Czech Music 2024, one that poses provocative questions: are we willing to admit the German-Jewish Prague-born Schulhoff, whose mother tongue was German, yet who actively espoused Czech music culture, into the context of Czech music? And what about Korngold, who was born in Brno but left the city at an early age to develop his oeuvre under entirely different influences? Where do the boundaries of what we call Czech musical culture lie?

Two of the compositions to be heard link jazz and symphonic music. Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue was a revolutionary feat in this respect, which shook first New York City, then the entire country, and ultimately the entire civilised world, as Leonard Bernstein wrote. One of the proofs of the “jazz earthquake”, even beyond the big pond, is Schulhoff’s music.

The concert on April 14, 2024 at the Wiener Konzerthaus is the start of a small concert and abo series by the Filharmonie Brno in Vienna.
