Around 20 October 1874, Bedřich Smetana became definitively deaf. This was not a disaster for Czech music or the Czech nation – even afterwards he was able to compose and create works that he could not, but did not have to hear, because he knew how they should sound. Pavel Šnajdr and the BCO and other Czech artists will hold an extraordinary “opening day” at the beginning of this year’s Exposition of New Music and on the occasion of the Year of Czech Music 2024, dedicated to the anniversary of Smetana’s deafness. In the words of the project’s creators, “We bear no responsibility for births and deaths, but that we can continue to exist normally after deafness is worthy of the greatest celebration.” The project Never Heard, Yet Unheard makes present the “homeland” that Bedřich Smetana never heard. It will be interpreted in three different ways over the course of one day in separate concerts – from the traditional to a purely contemporary version.

Tickets are also on sale for individual concerts. Find them in the calendar of events on our website.
