Concert at the Czech Centre New York

We haven’t performed at Carnegie Hall yet, but we’re already playing. At the Bohemian National Hall during the opening of the exhibition called Famous Czech Composers yesterday. And then a chamber concert at the Czech Center New York.

Today we will broadcast live on Český rozhlas from the Czech Center NY. At 13.04 (CET time), all regional stations will join together for an hour-long interview with our director, from 14.00 (CET time) the live broadcast continues on Český rozhlas Brno with the special programme called Morava Conquering New York. The unique live broadcasting is provided by Jiří Kokmotos, for the great support and help we thank the former correspondent of Czech Radio and now the director of the Czech Center in NYC Miroslav Konvalina.

Do you like to flip through the calendar? Do you sometimes daydream when you look at it and imagine what happened on that day exactly 100, 150, 200… years ago? Do you enjoy anniversaries, preferably round ones, and holidays? We do, and accordingly we have also prepared a series of family concerts in the 2024/2025 season. We will commemorate important anniversaries of premieres of compositions, births of composers, musical events, holidays and so on, which are related to the respective period in which the concert takes place. The main dramaturge (the one who selects the compositions) is therefore time. And in a way you will be too, because we will give you the opportunity to choose one song for each concert – democratically, of course. Come with us to create, listen and have fun.

One hundred years ago, on 31 January 1925, the world premiere of the ballet Who is the Most Powerful in the World? Bohuslav Martinů. The fairy tale story about mice was performed together with Osvald Chlubna’s opera Alladina and Palomides, but in the very next performance the young composer’s ballet found itself in the company of the Brno master Janáček, when it was performed in one evening together with the opera The Cunning Little Vixen. The latter was premiered in Brno two months earlier, on 6 November 1924, and in 1965 it also opened the new building of the Janáček Theatre.

For children, a music workshop is prepared in the foyer of the Besední dům from 12:15 pm (free admission and no registration). At the same time, adults can attend an expert lecture by musical guests.

The cycle of the six so-called Paris symphonies represents the first pinnacle of achievement in Joseph Haydn’s oeuvre and, together with the last Mozart symphonies, also the peak of the genre in terms of form, composition and musical content. One of three conductors to have recorded and issued all 107 Haydn symphonies, last year Dennis Russell Davies undertook to perform the whole Paris symphonies cycle with his Filharmonie Brno. Following Symphony No. 83, in the upcoming season we can look forward to Symphony No. 87.

During his stay in Vienna (1802–1808), Anton Reicha often visited Joseph Haydn, who became his musical role model. Reicha’s Piano Concerto in E-flat major, written in Vienna, thus carries a distinct impression of Haydn’s style, but also hints at the Romantic period to come.

One of Richard Strauss’s last major works, Metamorphosen was written shortly before the end of WWII as an elegy in which this paramount representative of late Romanticism expressed not just his devastation over the loss of irreplaceable cultural values, but also his belief in the beauty of our world. A powerful testimony by the 80-year-old composer, the piece quotes or echoes music by Beethoven, Wagner and Strauss himself.
