Franz Schubert (1797–1828) could never have met Luciano Berio (1925–2003): they lived in different centuries. And yet… in 1988–1989 Berio wrote Rendering, in which he used the motifs as well as other musical material from the sketches that Schubert made during the last weeks of his life for his planned Symphony in D major. As Berio noted, these sketches are rather complex and winsome: they suggest a new path that Schubert was embarking on, one that took him away from Beethoven’s influence. Rendering is not an attempt at reconstruction: it is a creative dialogue between two composers active in different eras. Berio wanted to revive old colours, such as those in Giotto’s frescoes in Assisi, without concealing the effects of time or filling the voids “in style”. He mixed Schubert’s material with his own music freely inspired by Schubert. The work was premiered in 1990 in Amsterdam by the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
