In January 2020 at Besední dům, we witnessed, in the composer’s presence, a memorable performance of Tigran Mansurian’s (born 1939) Requiem, conducted by Alexander Liebreich. Impressed by the success of the first Czech performance of his Requiem (dedicated to the victims of the Armenian genocide of 1915), Mansurian decided to create for Filharmonie Brno an orchestral version of his quartet Agnus Dei.
The music of the Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov (born 1937) feels like an echo of the music of the classical period. And so it is with The Messenger (Visnik) from 1996. The composer said: “The Messenger, that is actually an angel, an omnipresent being that observes our human world. Essentially, all the classical pieces – by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and so on – if they are performed in a particular fashion and not reservedly, they are messengers, not just of their composers but also of the period when this music was created. In my piece, Mozart sounds as if from a distance. This is not a stylisation but a metaphor. The sound of wind whispering in the background of my piece refers to the Book of Kings, to a section where God reveals himself to Elijah not as a windstorm, nor as a thunderstorm, nor as fire, but as gentle wind.”
