• This is the opening concert of the Brno Philharmonic’s 64^th season and Dennis Russell Davies’s second season in the roles of the orchestra’s chief conductor and artistic director ● A legendary pianist of Russian extraction, Elisabeth Leonskaja, is steeped in the 20^th century Russian piano tradition; she has lived in Vienna since 1978 ● Brahms’s First Symphony, written over 14 years (1862-1876), is sometimes described as “Beethoven’s Tenth” ● Bartók’s most celebrated piano concerto, No. 3, was written in the last months of the composer’s life in 1945 ● Joe Hisaishi, the famous Japanese film music composer, is particularly known for his collaborations with the filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, including the animated features Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle
