Directed by Mark Ther, this performance draws upon the first and, so far, the only Czech presentation of André Gide’s radio play Oedipus with music by Bohuslav Martinů. The drama was performed live on radio in 1936, directed by Jindřich Honzl and with an introductory word by Vladimír Holan. Gide’s version of the ancient drama actualised and radicalised many of the motifs and sections of the classic tragedy by translating the performance on stage into verbal action. Using the language of modern drama, it brings Oedipus’s fate closer to the experience of modern people.
