The composers featured at Filharmonie Brno’s Advent concert are more closely linked than a first glance might suggest. Tying them together is not only the style of Viennese Classicism, but also their lifelines, and they even met socially, as confirmed by witnesses. The Irish tenor Michael Kelly, who first portrayed Don Basilio in the Viennese performance of the Marriage of Figaro (1786), tells a fascinating anecdote in his Reminiscences (1826): in 1784 at the home of his friend, Stephen Storace, he met the prominent figures of Vienna’s musical life, enjoying music-making together in a string quartet: Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf and Joseph Haydn on the violins, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on the viola and Johann Baptist Wanhal on the cello.
