Kantiléna is a select choir of children and youth at the Brno Philharmonic; its three departments are attended by around 130 singers aged 5 to 19.It was founded in 1956 as the Šlapanice Children’s Choir on the initiative of Ivan Sedláček, its later long-time artistic director.
In 1967 it became a select ensemble with its present name and since 1984 it has been a member of the Brno Philharmonic. During its existence it has performed more than 1,500 concerts at home, in 17 European countries, in the USA, Canada and Japan. Her repertoire ranges from works of Renaissance polyphony to contemporary works; she has performed sacred music in more than 250 churches in this country, in European capitals and in New York.
She has collaborated with the National Theatre in Brno in a number of productions. She has won absolute victories at competitions in Arezzo, Italy (1981) and Neerpelt, Belgium (1984 and 2006), two gold medals at the World Choir Olympics in Graz (2008), the Audience Award and the “Excellent” diploma in Montreux, Switzerland (2009), and the 1st prize in Llangollen, Wales (2013).
