GEORG ANTON BENDA Sinfonia No. 5 in G major
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Violin Concerto No. 5 in A major KV 219
JOHANN WENZEL KALLIWODA Symphony No. 5 in B minor, Op. 106
Milan Al-Ashhab violin
Filharmonie Brno
conductor Robert Kružík
These two concerts, to be held during Advent shortly before Christmas Eve, are dominated by the number five, a symbolic reference to the fifth candle people would place in the middle of the Advent wreath and light on Christmas Eve once darkness fell. The fifth candle was white (a symbol of spiritual purity) and represented Jesus Christ himself; it was a harbinger of light and hope…
The three works will give us a chronological guided tour of 18th and 19th century music history: in Benda’s sinfonia (written some time after 1765), the Classical style was just “hatching”, in Mozart’s violin concerto (1775) it was maturing, and though it provided a foundation for Kalliwoda’s symphony (1840), in that piece it was already ceding place to early Romanticism.
The discussion with the dramaturge and his guests will take place at 6 pm in the director’s lounge. Reservations are required at besedy@filharmonie-brno.cz by 12 noon on Wednesday of the week of the concert.
