Celebrating his 80th birthday on 16 April 2026, Pēteris Vasks is one of the most successful composers in the world today as well as a powerful voice for his country of Latvia, which sometimes seems to disappear from history, at other times proudly rising again.
Vasks’s The Seasons is not programme music. The pieces express feelings much more than images, and weren’t even originally conceived as a cycle. White Scenery (1980) and Autumn Music (1981) were written for the pianist Tālivaldis Deksnis. Spring Music was commissioned by the Svenska Rikskonserter foundation and was first heard in Stockholm in 1996 in a performance by Bengt Forsberg. When Vasks heard the Latvian pianist Vestards Šimkus playing Spring Music in 2004, he decided to write Green Scenery, a piece inspired by summer, thus completing a cycle whose complete performance offers a decidedly rare experience for listeners. After all, for a recital featuring this work Vestards Šimkus was presented with the 2010 Great Music Award, Latvia’s highest honour in music. In Terezie Fialová, Vasks’s The Seasons has found another outstanding interpreter who understands the composer perfectly.
