At Prague Spring on 14 May 1956, the Brno State Philharmonic presented Vítězslav Novák’s sea fantasy The Storm under the baton of its first chief conductor Břetislav Bakala. This was symbolic, as the monumental work had been commissioned by the Beseda Brněnská philharmonic association for its 50th anniversary and was premièred on 17 April 1910 at Besední dům (it is hard to imagine how they squezed six soloists, a substantial chorus and a large orchestra in that hall, but it really did take
place there!).
