Concert program here.
In 2025 we commemorate 200 years since the death and 275 years since the birth of the Italian composer Antonio Salieri (1750–1825), one of the most significant opera composers and influential educators of his era. Lamentably, Salieri’s legacy as composer is known by few people today; his music has practically disappeared from the theatre and concert stage. The reason for this is unfortunate – Salieri has been painted as rancorous and the less inventive rival (or even murderer) of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in a series of artistic works beginning with Pushkin’s drama Mozart and Salieri (1830) – which was developed by Rimsky-Korsakov into an opera (1898) – and followed by Miloš Forman’s film Amadeus (1984), after Peter Shaffer’s 1980 play of the same name.
At 18:00, a discussion on the life and work of Antonio Salieri will take place in the lounge of the Besední dům with Simona Šindlářová, curator of the Department of Music History of the Moravian Museum and specialist in 18th and 19th century music. Reserve your place by emailing besedy@filharmonie-brno.cz by 12.00 on Monday 10 November 2025.
