Fazıl Say and Brno
It is no exaggeration to say that the Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say (born 1970) is a darling of Brno audiences, having won their hearts back in January 2009 with his performance of Saint-Saëns’s Second Piano Concerto. He left an even bigger mark on the city’s cultural life as Filharmonie Brno resident artist in the 2013/2014 season, appearing in his artistic double role as performer and com poser. Particularly memorable was Say’s recital in spring 2014, which incidentally was also a baptism by fire for the new Steinway grand piano recently purchased for Besední dům. Interest in the concert was enormous, the hall was full to bursting and for the first time ever additional chairs had to be placed on the stage around the piano for overflow audience members. There seemed to be no end to the standing ovation…

In 2025 we commemorate 50 years since the death of Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich (1906–1975), one of the 20th century’s greatest symphonists. The composer’s Symphony No. 15 is characteristic of his late period when thun der and complexity took a back seat to an economy of means and deliberation. It reflects the discrepancy between subjectivity and social reality, between soaring of the inner spirit and an exterior world that seems pessimistic.
