Sinfonietta La Jolla, Bohuslav Martinů’s (1890–1959) final return to the Neo-Classical style, was written in 1950 in New York and is named after the Californian town close to the border with Mexico whose Musical Arts Society of La Jolla commissioned the work for its orchestra.
Concerto in G minor by the French composer Francis Poulenc (1899 to 1963) was written in 1934–1938, originally on commission from Princess Edmond de Polignac. Poulenc was asked to provide a work for a chamber orchestra including an easy organ part that the princess could play herself. Poulenc, however, abandoned this idea and wrote an ambitious work that ranks as one of the definitive 20th-century organ concertos.
Symphony No. 86 by Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) is part of the Paris symphonies cycle (Nos. 82–87), representing the first pinnacle of achievement in Haydn’s oeuvre and, together with the last Mozart symphonies, also the crowning of the genre’s development in terms of form, composition and musical content.

Chief conductor Dennis Russell Davies, one of only three conductors in the world who have recorded and published the complete 107 Haydn symphonies, has resolved to perform and record the entire cycle of Paris symphonies with “his” Brno Philharmonic in connection with the approaching Haydn jubilee. After Symphonies Nos. 83 and 87, we can look forward to Symphony No. 86 next season.
