An Italian, a Bohemian, a Belgian and a Frenchman meet in Paris… That could be the beginning of a joke, but this concert programme offers a much more serious story of interesting connections. Luigi Cherubini (1760–1842) was born in Florence, but came to Paris in the mid-1780s and made it his home for more than half a century. Earning Napoleon’s disfavour, he found temporary refuge in Vienna, where he met the Bohemian Antoine Reicha (1770–1836), whom he helped move to Paris when he himself returned. Reicha became celebrated as a theoristand educator at the Paris Conservatoire, where he taught many composers who later became famous, including the Belgian César Franck (1822–1890) and Charles Gounod (1818–1893), the only native Frenchman in this group of four creative artists featured in this concert.
