An Italian, a Czech, a Belgian and a Frenchman meet in Paris …, an anecdote might begin, but there is a much more serious dramaturgical “story” behind the programme of the concert, with an interesting context. The Italian composer Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842) was born in Florence but made Paris his home for more than half a century, arriving there in the mid-1880s. During Napoleon’s reign, due to the Emperor’s hostility, he took refuge for a time in Vienna, where he met the Czech-born composer Antonín Rejcha (1770-1836), whom he greatly assisted in relocating to Paris, where he himself returned. Rejcha then became famous mainly as a theorist and teacher at the Paris Conservatoire and trained a number of later famous composers, including the Belgian-born composer César Franck (1822-1890) and Charles Gounod (1818-1893), the only “pure” Frenchman in the company of the four creative personalities whose music the concert will offer.
