• Birdsong takes the leading role here ● Respighi’s 1928 suite, inspired by 17^th and 18^th century works, seeks to imitate avian calls (pigeon, hen, nightingale and cuckoo) ● With Nordic Romantic pensiveness, birdsong recorded in Finland, including in the bogs of Liminka and near the Arctic Circle, is used as a “solo instrument” in the best known work (1972) by Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016), a prominent figure in Finnish music ● Mendelssohn’s famous symphony is imbued with the composer’s impressions from his tour of Italy, undertaken in 1830
