My Mother Goose
In 1908 Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) wrote a four-hand piano album on fairy tale themes for the children of his friend Godebsky. Its title, My Mother Goose, may seem a little bizarre, but not in France, where everyone knows it from the classic book by the fairy-tale writer Perrault (Tales of My Mother Goose, 1627). Three years later, the composer orchestrated all five numbers into an orchestral suite, which he later added two more, and by combining all the movements with interludes, he finally created a small ballet.

Toshio Hosokawa (1955) is one of the most acclaimed composers of our time; his works have been performed on prestigious stages and festivals by star performers such as conductors Kent Nagano, Sir Simon Rattle and Robin Ticciati. He studied composition in Japan and then with Isang Yun and Klaus Huber in Germany, resulting in a natural and highly distinctive synthesis of Eastern and Western compositional thought in his work. His compositions are imbued with Zen Buddhist philosophy and symbolic interpretation of nature. The Brno Philharmonic recently performed Meditation (to the victims of the tsunami on 11 March) from his works.

When looking at the work of Robert Schumann (1810 to 1856) as a whole, one cannot help but notice a certain tendency to concentrate on one genre at a particular time. If the first decade of Schumann’s output was focused on characteristic piano compositions, and if 1840 became the year of song cycles, the following year began his inclination towards symphonic music. At this time Schumann was at the height of his creative powers. He had achieved recognition, was balanced mentally and artistically, and had also found his human happiness in the form of his relationship with Clara Wieck, whom he married – despite her father’s protests – in September 1841.
