Event Details

In January 2020, the violinist Milan Paľa performed an incredible feat by substituting for a soloist who had fallen ill; in a few hours he learned Antonín Vranický’s virtuoso Violin Concerto in C major and then played it over three evenings, receiving a standing ovation each time. With this singular accomplishment, Milan Paľa earned an invitation to perform in the next season, this time presenting a work that was closer to his heart and his temperament: Alfred Schnittke’s Third Violin Concerto, conducted by Alexander Liebreich.

Written in 1984 for Gidon Kremer and the Berliner Philharmoniker, Schnittke’s final, Fourth Violin Concerto is a typical example of his polystylistic technique of composition. In the motivic material of the concerto, Schnittke encoded the cryptograms of several names: Kremer’s, his own, and those of his three composer friends: Edison Denisov, Sofia Gubaidulina and Arvo Pärt.

On 1 April 2023, we will mark the 150th birthday of Sergei Rachmaninoff, a composer and pianist who is particularly noted for his virtuoso, approachable and Romantic piano pieces. His Third Symphony in A minor (1936) was written in exile and counts among his last works.
