This year’s edition of the Exposition of New Music festival opens with a unique project that will bring Erik Satie’s music to life across the city of Brno.
Satie never wrote music merely for the concert hall – he dreamed of it becoming part of daily life, just like wallpaper or furniture.
Join us on the streets of Brno and experience Satie’s works in a context he would have surely loved.
BRNĚNCKÉ MONTEC NA OLTECU
At 2:00 PM, Plovárna Café at Mendlovo náměstí will transform into a little corner of Montmartre.
Composer and improviser Jaroslav Šťastný will open the afternoon with Satie’s piano works, turning an ordinary Saturday into an extraordinary celebration of sound.
L´OMNIBUS AUTOMOBILE
At 2:30 PM, a historic tram departs from Mendlovo náměstí for a musical journey through the city.
On board, accordionists Nikita Kadesnikov and Filip Krišš will perform selected pieces by Erik Satie.
Their music will soften the noise of the streets and infuse the cityscape with quiet poetry.
Tram route:
Mendlovo náměstí – Václavská – Hybešova – Nové Sady – Zelný Trh – Náměstí Svobody – Moravské náměstí – Malinovského náměstí – Hlavní nádraží – Hybešova – Václavská – Mendlovo náměstí.
The tram will continuously loop from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM.
MUSIQUE D´AMEUBLEMENT
Throughout the afternoon, Brno Contemporary Orchestra (BCO), conducted by Pavel Šnajdr, will perform Erik Satie’s famous “furniture music” on Římské náměstí.
This groundbreaking idea invites music not to demand attention but to gently blend into the surroundings – a soundscape for everyday life.
EN HABIT DE CHEVAL / LA STATUE DE BRONZE
At Moravské náměstí contemporary producer and DJ Isama Zing will reinterpret Satie’s works into hypnotic polyrhythmic collages and ambient remixes.
Here, the past will intertwine with the sound of today, creating a new and vibrant musical landscape.
At 5:00 PM, in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, the bustling energy of the day will give way to quiet reflection.
The evening will feature the world premiere of the organ meditation Méditation avant la Messe des pauvres by composer Peter Graham, followed by Erik Satie’s enigmatic Messe des pauvres.
Come and experience Brno in a new way.
Come and be embraced by music that never grows old.
