Once upon a time there was a peasant who had three sons. The eldest was a hard worker with a bad character. The middle one was a lazy man with no character. The youngest was a dreamer who loved his father very much. He was a boy of good character. When the father died, the eldest two sons divided the inheritance between them. The farm, the pastures and all the cattle went to the eldest son who wanted to get rich through hard work. The stables, barns and orchard went to the middle son, who rented everything to the eldest son so that he could get rich without working. Since there was nothing left, the older brothers drove the youngest away, shouting after him, “Get out of here with the wealth your father left you!” And laughing, they threw a few stray coins and a cat at his head.
The youngest son was very sad. He had always taken good care of his father, and of all his sons he loved him most. And now here he was alone, without a father, without a home, without possessions. All he had left was his cat. But he had a nice way of saying..: “Sir, get me a pair of high boots, a silk suit, a jute bag and a rope. And you won’t regret it!”
So begins the fairy tale of the Cat in the Shoes (also known as the Marquis of Carabas), which was adapted into a melodrama for narrator and chamber ensemble by the Belgian composer Robert Groslot and commissioned by the Brno Philharmonic for orchestra. The orchestral version will be performed in a world premiere with the unique and unmistakable Kristýna Drášilová as the narrator.
