- Pictures at an Exhibition (in this country sometimes called simply Kartinky, after the original), Modest Mussorgsky’s popular cycle originally composed for the piano and inspired by his impressions from the St Petersburg exhibition of genre watercolours, designs for applied arts items and architectural drawings by Viktor Hartmann, in spectacular colourful instrumentation by Maurice Ravel ● Piero’s frescoes at Saint Francis Church in Arezzo served as the source of inspiration for a musical expression of “the kind of solemn, frozen silence and opaque, coloured atmosphere which contains a strange, peaceful and moving poetry” that Martinů (in his own words) found in the frescoes ● Performed here in a world premiere with visualisation by Cori O’Lan, prepared in collaboration with the celebrated Ars Electronica, focused on the employment of modern technologies in the arts ● A symphony composed on the basis of music for Hindemith’s feature-length opera Mathis der Maler (1933), which, against the background of historical events – the German Peasants’ War – develops the inner drama of the famous painter and author of the Isenheim altarpiece, Mathis Nithart Gothardt, also known as Matthias Grünewald, who was disquieted by tormenting questions about the meaning of life
