Event Details

The Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian (1903–1978) in his oeuvre drew on Russian musical Romanticism, and proved his originality in his masterful exploitation of the folklore of the nations of the South Caucasus and his synthesis of European and Oriental sensibilities, which developed not along the lines of the Socialist Realist demands for intelligibility, folksiness and mass character, but in the context of Khachaturian’s professional interest in, and exceptional admiration of, the traditions.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s (1840–1893) last, sixth symphony was written very quickly, as confirmed by a letter the composer sent in February 1893 to his nephew: “During my journey I had the idea for another symphony, this time with a programme, but such a programme that will remain an enigma to everyone. Let them guess! […] Now, upon my return, I have started to write the sketches, and the work went so feverishly and quickly that in less than four days the first movement was ready. In terms of form there will be much new in this symphony; for instance, the finale will not be a thunderous Allegro, but, on the contrary, an incredibly drawn-out Adagio.” In August, he added in another letter to the nephew: “Personally I consider it the best and, in particular, the most sincere of all my creations. I love it as I never loved any other of my musical offspring.”
