Chris Newman, an English artist, composer, visual artist and poet based in Germany, became famous mainly for his own song cycles, which he himself interprets in a raspy “punk” voice. Some critics refer to him as “the Schubert of today”, and this is certainly not an unwarranted accolade.

Direct music and sometimes explicit lyrics characterize most of Newman’s music. His performance practice itself illustrates why Newman’s music has sometimes been described as “willfully bad”.
