One of today’s most distinctive cross-genre drummers has a portfolio that would be the envy of anyone. His services have been used by Avishai Cohen, Brad Mehldau, St. Vincent, David Bowie, Meshell Ndegeocello, Gretchen Parlato, Lionel Loueke and Tigran Hamasyan, among others. But he also has a solo career and it is as its protagonist that he will come to Brno.

Mark Guiliana was born in 1980 in New Jersey and attended William Paterson University, where he graduated in jazz in 2003. However, he has a trans-genre, rather conceptual approach to the instrument, which allowed him to create the electric duo Mehliana with Brad Mehldau, who plays synthesizers in it. Arguably Guiliano’s most famous release, however, is the album Blackstar, the latest effort from one of popular music’s greatest geniuses, David Bowie. His playing style is truly “wide-ranging”; he has mastered acoustic jazz playing, and can add rock or funk punch and directness to his playing, as well as playing with the colours of electronic instruments and the unusual rhythms typical of progressive and avant-garde music.

Mark Guiliana is the protagonist of a number of albums on which he has worked as a soloist, composer or producer. Last year he released an album with the catchy title MARK, for which he was nominated for a Grammy Award. Here, for the first time ever, he relied solely on his own skills, as a composer, player and producer. As a multi-instrumentalist, here he plays percussion, piano, synths and other instruments, layering and processing them. The recording, made at Studio 606 in Los Angeles, is a culmination of Guiliano’s experiences and inspirations, and a catalyst for a new direction.

You can buy the concert on its own or as part of the “CREATE YOUR OWN” season subscription from 9 June 2025 (8am) when non-renewed subscriptions are released.

The concert can be purchased as a part of the SUBSCRIPTION Jazz and World Music ONLINE from 29 April and at the Ticket Office of Filharmonie Brno since 12 May 2025.
