  • We present three famous musicians from Nová Říše in Moravia ● Jan Novák (1921-1984) was a composer linked with Brno, who lived in exile (including Italy and Germany) from 1968 until his death. This is an orchestral version of his cycle of waltzes, Elegance of the Dance, originally for the piano, full of grace, charm and humour ● It is 200 years since the death of Antonín Vranický (1761–1820), a violin virtuoso, Kapellmeister, teacher and composer, who after studying at Brno’s Jesuit seminary worked in the service of the Lobkowicz family in Vienna. His Violin Concerto in C major is performed by the concertmaster of the Czech Philharmonic ● Antonín’s older brother Pavel Vranický (1756-1808), was a composer and celebrated conductor (he led the premiere of Beethoven’s First Symphony), and orchestral director at the Theater am Kärntnertor and the Burgtheater. His symphony, written in 1797, was considered politically provocative for its daring title and was banned by the authorities ● The musicologist Stanislav Tesař (also a native of Nová Říše) and bass Richard Novák (Jan Novák’s cousin) will give pre-concert talks at 6:15pm.
