Karlheinz Stockhausen’s site-specific composition Fresco was premiered as part of the project Musik für die Beethovenhalle in Bonn in 1969 and has never been presented since. Lasting for five hours, it is scored for four spatially separated ensembles whose membership is only loosely defined. The form, course and meaning of the work is defined by its subtitle, Wandklänge zur Meditation (wall sounds for meditation); it is therefore not a concert piece in the traditional sense but more an invasion of sound into a particular space, where the audience may freely walk from one group of performers to the next, thereby transforming their own sound-perception perspectives. The installation of this project in the compelling spaces of Besední dům will be a truly exceptional event and surely provide the climax of the Exposition of New Music in its 36th year.
