Erik Satie – CHAT NOIR, SPORTS ET DIVERTISSEMENTS
Hana Hána, Sára Medková (CZ)
An evening inspired by the world of late 19th-century Parisian cabaret and the music of Erik Satie – one of the most influential and distinctive composers of the 20th century.
The legendary cabaret Chat Noir was founded by Rodolphe Salis in 1881. Alongside food and drink, it offered a rich artistic programme – songs, acrobatics, and shadow theatre. For struggling artists of Montmartre, it was a rare chance to perform, connect, and survive. Satie, who lived nearby, worked there as a pianist and songwriter, accompanying singers, comedians, and humorists. For one of them – Paulette Darty – he wrote the now-iconic chanson Je te veux, the very essence of Parisian cabaret.
This concert, prepared for the 2025 edition of Exposition of New Music, brings Satie’s cabaret songs back to life. Alongside his chansons, the programme includes selections from the piano suite Sports et divertissements (Sports and Pastimes), a series of miniature pieces accompanied by poetically ironic texts. Originally intended only for the performer’s eyes – a kind of “conceptual pastime” – these witty notes will be presented to the audience by translator Juraj Groch.
The evening will also include songs from the cycle Ludions (set to poems by Léon-Paul Fargue), satirical miniatures such as Choral inappétissant, Le tango, Le feu d’artifice, and the timeless Gymnopédie No. 1.
Hana Hána – vocalist, flautist, and versatile artist performing internationally across classical, film, pop, and performative genres.
Sára Medková – pianist, composer, and performer known for her technical brilliance and extraordinary musicality, with over 100 world premieres to her name and appearances at leading festivals around the globe.
Juraj Groch – translator, university lecturer, and narrator with a remarkable life journey spanning French literature, photography, visual art, and seafaring.
