- Sinfonia da Requiem (1940), Britten’s largest purely orchestral work responding to the events of war, originally commissioned by the Japanese government to mark the anniversary of the imperial dynasty but rejected by the Japanese due to its title that referenced the Christian Requiem Mass; it was then dedicated to the memory of the composer’s parents • Igor Stravinsky’s deeply spiritual Symphony of Psalms, “composed in a state of religious and musical ebullience” during his neo-Classical period to mark the 50th anniversary of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, with unusual orchestration (prominently featuring winds but lacking violins and violas) • Bernstein’s Third Symphony (on text by the composer), written in 1963 to commemorate J.F. Kennedy and referencing in its title the Jewish prayer of blessing and praise
