One of the climaxes of the 2019/2020 philharmonic season in Brno was the performance of Antonín Rejcha’s feature-long oratorio Lenora after Gottfried August Bürger. Appearing in the eponymous role was the Czech soprano Martina Janková, who was so enchanted by Bürger’s ballads and their settings by various composers that she decided to devise an original programme for her recital in Brno. Gottfried August Bürger, a member of a literary association known as the Göttingen Grove (Göttinger Hain), was a leading 18th-century German poet who sought inspiration in popular verse. At the core of his oeuvre are his ballads, some tragic, other humorous and satirical. This evening’s programme will also offer the perspective of another composer – Václav Jan Tomášek – on Lenora.

The concert will take place under the auspices of the Goethe-Intitut in the Czech Republic.
