The concert offers not only a representative cross-section of 20th-century Armenian orchestral music, but also three completely different compositional approaches to Armenian national traditions: Tigran Mansurjan relies on the spiritual intimacy manifested at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries by composer and folklorist Komitas Vardapet; Avet Terterjan created his own sound orchestral world by studying traditional music; finally, Aram Khachaturian made a special use of Armenian sounds in symphonic works subject to the “dictated” Soviet aesthetics of the time.
