Event Details

The Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen (born 1952) wrote let me tell you in 2012–2013 as a commission from the Berliner Philharmoniker, which premiered the piece under the baton of Andris Nelsons and with the phenomenal soprano Barbara Hannigan as the soloist on 20 December 2013. Since then, the work has had many performances on renowned stages and won a string of prizes including the Grawemeyer Award and the Diapason d’Or. Equally notable is the growing circle of performers of the solo part. The author of the libretto, Paul Griffiths, depicts the story of Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, but does so from the viewpoint of the heroine. He captures her feelings and turns them into poetic images which, in Abrahamsen’s musical setting, acquire an impressive momentum culminating in the finale, where Hamlet becomes the Sun for Ophelia; she turns into an object of his reflection; but in the background we already hear a premonition of Ophelia’s last journey through the English winter landscape, during which she gives up her love.
