Janáček’s Amarus 125
Amarus, his first cantata, was written by Leoš Janáček (1854-1928) at the age of forty-three, after his many years of experience at the head of the choir of the Brno Beseda. Vrchlický’s poem appealed to him because of its atmosphere (not a description) of the monastic life that he himself knew so well and which was inscribed in his heart during the years when the human soul is most receptive.

Rejcha’s Te Deum 200
Antonín Rejcha (1770-1836) became famous as a theorist, teacher and creator of wind quintets, and for a long time he was perceived in this way, thus neglecting many other unique and timeless features of his work. Although the Czech-rooted composer drew on classical forms, he applied numerous innovative influences to them. This applied not only to his chamber music, but also, for example, to his four large vocal-orchestral works, three of which were composed during his time in Vienna, the fourth later in Paris – a kind of free cycle with a humanist message that responded directly to the situation of the time: The Requiem can be seen as a memorial mass for the fallen in the Napoleonic Wars, the Lenore (based on a text by Gottfried August Bürger, treating the same theme as Erben’s Wedding Shirts) as an indictment of these wars and their impact on concrete human lives, the New Psalm (based on a text by Siegfried August Mahlmann, paraphrasing the Te Deum) as a prayer for peace, and finally the Te Deum as a thanksgiving for the establishment of peace. The universal reach of Reich’s legacy into the present is in many ways evident…
